Soft and supple golden flatbreads

Homemade Pita Bread

Makes 4

Ingredients:

  • 200g flour
  • 3g dried yeast
  • 140-145g water (around 35°C)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of Salt
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

Cooking Steps:

  1. Mix Ingredients: First mix the dried yeast and water (around 35°C) and let it sit for a few minutes in a jug. Combine the flour, salt, and olive oil in a bowl and slowly add the liquid. Mix everything together until well combined.

  2. Knead Dough: Knead the dough for just a few minutes until it forms together. It does not need to be kneaded until it bounces back, that is the joy of this recipe.

  3. Place the dough back into the bowl and cover it with a cloth. Let it rest for about an hour.

  4. Periodic Kneading: Over the next hour, every 15 minutes, give the dough a very small knead, can even just be a stretch and fold. After return the dough to the bowl and cover it with the cloth.

  5. Divide and Roll: After the hour is up, divide the dough into 4 equal pieces. Use a rolling pin to roll out each piece into a round shape.

  6. Cooking: Heat a medium to hot pan with a little bit of oil. Cook each pita for 1-2 minutes on each side, depending on the thickness. Look for small air bubbles to appear while cooking before flipping it over.

  7. Serve: Once cooked, transfer the pita bread to a cooling rack. Enjoy them fresh with your favorite accompaniments! They pair perfectly with chicken shawarma.
